Despite Russia's protests, Stalin was no less villainous than HitlerIT IS depressing that it even needed to be discussed. On July 3rd in Vilnius the parliamentary assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the continent’s main outfit, passed a resolution equating Stalin and Hitler. It called for August 23rd to become an official day of remembrance for the millions who were repressed, murdered, deported, robbed and raped as a result of the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. That deal, and the secret protocols that went with it, were a death sentence for the countries from the Baltic to the Black sea. The poisonous after-effects linger until today. The resolution should have met with particularly thunderous applause from the Russian side. After all, Russians by most measures suffered particularly badly under Stalin. Following Lenin’s terrible legacy, he systematised the persecution of the country’s brightest and best. Anyone reading the classic memoirs of Stalinism, such as “Kolyma tales” by Varlam Shalamov, or Nadezhda Mandelstam’s “Hope against hope”, or a modern history such as Anne Applebaum’s “Gulag”, is suffused with the horror of those years. It is hard to imagine anyone quibbling over their condemnation. ...

    • Haunting Images Of Russians Mining For The Gold That Stalin Once Needed

Russia is the world's fourth largest gold producer, and Kolyma in the far north-east of Russia is one of the regions most flush with gold.  During Stalin's rule, prisoners of the Gulag were sent to Kolyma and forced to mine for gold, which was desperately need to finance economic development.

    • Legendary Russian crime boss who earned title of ‘crowned thief’ in Communist gulag assassinated by sniper

MOSCOW — Police say one of the leaders of organized crime in Russia has been gunned down in Moscow. Aslan Usoyan, also known as Grandpa Khasan, came from a caste of professional criminals who sport elaborate tattoos, follow unwritten prison laws codified in Stalinist-era Gulags and have been romanticized in countless popular songs.

    • Europe.view: The end of history, revisited

The ex-communist states of eastern Europe are leaving their pasts behindWHERE would they be without their past, the ex-captive nations? (Or "ex-communist countries", "former Soviet satellite states", "the old Eastern block": so much history even in the category). The region between the Baltic and the Black Sea is so shaped by history that at first sight the question seems absurd. Trianon, Yalta, Molotov-Ribbentrop, Munich—the gloomy echoes of past betrayals and atrocities are inescapable. ...

    • Buchanan’s Apologia for Hitler

As if some neocon were setting out to parody dovish thinking on contemporary issues, paleocon Pat Buchanan has gone and written a “blame Britian first” account of the origins of World War II. Apparently, according to Buchanan, Hitler was just seeking to unify the German-speaking people in one country by annexing Danzig and had no intention of fighting a wider war:
