    Barnstorming in antique aircraft

    Wed, 06/17/2009 - 09:35 EDT - CNN - Money

Wearing an antique leather flight suit and sneakers, Bill Allen inserts a steel crank into the cowling of his 1930 Stearman biplane and leans his weight against the handle. The machine emits a faint whirling sound that grows in pitch until it blares like an air-raid siren. Allen steps back and dashes around the double wingtip. Clambering up the steps to the fuselage, he swings into the tiny cockpit.

DAVOS, Switzerland — Bombardier president and CEO Pierre Beaudoin hopes that its CSeries airliners will take its first flight in June, demonstrating that the Quebec transportation giant has learned the lessons from Boeing’s difficulties with its 787 Dreamliner. In an interview with The Canadian Press in Davos, where he is participating in the World Economic Forum, Beaudoin said that assembly of the first CSeries test plane was “very advanced.” The wings have been attached to the commercial aircraft’s fuselage and machinists are ready to install the landing gear.

    • Sen. Lamar Alexander: 'I don’t see how you can pare back the current bill'

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) was a co-sponsor of the Wyden-Bennett bill. As recently as July, he said "we should support legislation like the Wyden-Bennett plan I’ve co-sponsored" rather than the health-care legislation before the Senate. So it caught my eye when he began attacking the very idea of comprehensive legislation. We spoke this afternoon about the Wyden-Bennett bill, whether the Senate can pass large pieces of legislation and why Democrats can't pare their bill back with Republican support. What follows is a transcript with light edits for clarity and grammar.
