    Data expected show economy is moving toward recovery

    Reports expected on manufacturing, housing and an index of leading economic indicators hint of a rebound this year.

    Reports on manufacturing and housing this week will probably show that the U.S. economy in May, although still in a recession, took additional steps toward establishing a recovery this year, economists said.

      John Nyaradi submits:Market internals continued to strengthen on Thursday in spite of the rise in jobless claims, weaker manufacturing, a tepid earnings report from Federal Express and ongoing weakness in the housing market.Jobless claims rose 12,000, contrary to expected continued declines, while the Philly Fed manufacturing report took a steep drop from 21 to 8. On the positive side of the ledger, leading economic indicators were up 0.4%. Federal Express missed analyst

    • No triple dip but a slow UK recovery, business survey predicts

      George Osborne will be handed an encouraging assessment of the state of the economy on Tuesday as a survey of businesses predicts that Britain will avoid a triple-dip recession, reports The Guardian.

    • Stalling European factories and slowing China leave world economy looking to America

      LONDON/BEIJING — European manufacturing appeared no closer to recovery last month while growth in Asia cooled, according to business surveys and trade data on Friday that pointed to ongoing weakness in global demand. Purchasing managers’ reports from the United States due later, however, are expected to show growth picking up in the world’s largest economy, after a weak fourth quarter. In China, factory growth slowed to multi-month lows. Sluggish domestic demand added pressure to already depressed foreign sales, two separate purchasing manager indexes (PMI) showed.

      Here are some macro indicators for the Wisconsin macroeconomy. In sum, civilian employment is rising (to essentially 2011M01 levels), but nonfarm payroll employment is declining; private sector employment (ex-farm) is flat, while government employment is declining; and leading indicators are pointing to a downturn.

      Matteo Radaelli submits: NAHB housing market index (Wednesday 20) – Notwithstanding the improvement over recent months, the real estate sector remains very weak. This was reflected in the NAHB housing market index, which fell from 17 to 16 in December. With the labor market failing to reverse the negative trend of the last two years and foreclosures expected to rise in the months to come, we do not expect a rebound in the real estate sector over the short term.
