GM, auto workers union reach tentative deal

Reuters - The United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Co have reached a tentative agreement on contract changes the automaker wants to bring labor costs in line with U.S. rivals, the union and company said on Tuesday.

Via Rail and the union representing some of its workers reached a tentative deal ahead of a midnight strike deadline, the Canadian Auto Workers said. The union did not release details of the tentative settlement and said ratification votes were being scheduled. “We’re very pleased to have reached a tentative deal with Via Rail,” Bob Orr, assistant to the union president, said in a statement.

The United Auto Workers union says it has reached a tentative deal with Ford Motor Co. on contract concessions. Details of the agreement will be presented to plant-level union leaders from across the country at a meeting Tuesday in Detroit.

The deal will save General Motors about $10 billion in debt and give the union's retiree healthcare trust at least a 17.5% stake in the company when it emerges from a likely bankruptcy. General Motors Corp.

Air Canada's pilots will begin voting next Friday on whether to approve a new labour contract, with a decision expected by April 27. The Air Canada Pilots Association master executive council approved the terms of the contract Thursday, and decided to send the deal for ratification by the membership next week. While the terms of the agreement remain under lock and key, the union's leadership is expected to spend the next week presenting details of the deal to pilots during a road show across the country. The voting will begin April 15 online.
