Toby Shute submits:You remember last week, when I said to forget about shale? I didn't really mean it. My intended point was that there are other interesting oil and gas plays out there. Shale, however, is going to continue to captivate both U.S. and international players for years, and most likely decades, to come.Complete Story »

Toby Shute submits:When Petrohawk (NYSE: HK) announced the discovery of a new shale gas field back in October 2008, I think it's fairly safe to say that no one really cared.

    • This Big Bet On The Eagle Ford Is Paying Off Now

U.S. shale plays granted early-investors a heap of profit opportunities. One of the hottest “hot spots” is the Eagle Ford in South Texas. Heck, over the past decade oil production for the state of Texas has doubled – up from 1.1 million barrels per day to over 2.2 million. Most of that jump in production can be attributed to shale plays, in particular the Eagle Ford. This unexpected boom has created a lot of millionaires – land owners, small oil startups and certainly investors. Today we’ll take a look at this booming region and update on of our favorite companies…

    • Marathon May Have Increased the Value of Eagle Ford Leaseholders, Part 2

Michael Filloon submits: In part 1 of this series I focused on Marathon's purchase of Hilcorp's Eagle Ford acreage. This is an interesting situation, as a little under $25000/acre has become a topic of many conversations in the oil and gas realm.

    • Ways to Play the Eagle Ford

Michael Filloon submits: When looking at oil shale plays in the United States, the Bakken/Three Forks comes up first, due to the size of its reserves and the activity in the area. These assumptions may be right, but there are other shales in the United States that have huge upside potential.

    • Mark Papa On EOG's Eagle Ford Play: Increasing Recoveries Equal Increasing Value

By Devon Shire: Late last year I came across this article that detailed the thinking of EOG Resource’s (EOG) CEO Mark Papa on unconventional oil and gas plays in the United States.Papa is pretty well known as a straight shooter in the oil and gas industry so when he says something it is worth listening to. Th

    • US Shale Plays: Eagle Ford Looks Set to Overtake Barnett and Haynesville

The Eagle Ford may soon become the biggest producing shale play in Texas, and possibly the whole of the United States, judging by a new analysis by Evaluate Energy of horizontal drilling data sourced from Smith Bits Stats. The Eagle Ford Shale Formation, located in South West Texas covering 22 counties, is a relatively low producing play in the state. Its neighbouring plays, the Barnett and the Haynesville (Louisiana amp; Texas), have been grabbing all the headlines in recent months as they vie for the position of biggest producing play in the US.

    • Major Players in the Eagle Ford Shale

Michael Fitzsimmons submits:The Eagle Ford Shale play is located primarily in 24 counties of southern Texas. It is one of the most active regions for oil and gas E&P in the United States. The Eagle Ford contains a high percentage of carbonate shale - upwards to 70% in south Texas. The higher percentage of carbonate makes the Eagle Ford shale more brittle and “fracable." This means the Eagle Ford is more capable of producing a higher percentage of oil (rather than natural gas) compared to the other traditional shale plays.

    • The Difference Between Oil Shale and Shale Oil, And 6 Ways to Play It

I can’t recall an investment conference where I haven’t received at least one question about the potential of oil-rich plays such as the Bakken Shale and Eagle Ford Shale. Interest in unconventional oil fields has picked up in the wake of the Macondo disaster. Whereas new regulations and permitting delays will hamper U.S. deepwater drilling for at least another 12 to 24 months, onshore shale plays offer the best prospects for production growth.
