    Powerful quake hits off California coast: USGS

    A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern California, the US Geological Survey said.The quake occurred 22 miles (35 kilometers) west of Ferndale and 224 miles (360 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento, at a depth of nine miles (16 kilometers).The temblor hit at 4:27 pm (0027 GMT) and was followed by a series of four aftershocks measuring 3.7, 3.8, 3.5 and 3.6 on the open-ended Moment Magnitude Scale."Oh yeah, it shook," Ferndale volunteer fireman Manuel Enos told AFP, "windows broke or popped out of storefronts."

The West Coast-Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre in Palmer, Alaska, says the third quake hit at 7:28 p.m. Thursday, 72 kilometres south of Sandspit on the Haida Gwaii islands. The centre says quakes with magnitudes of 4.6 and 4.3 struck about 75 kilometres south and 97 kilometres southwest of Sandspit just hours earlier. The centre says there was no tsunami danger from any of the quakes.

      A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean off the coast of central Chile early Saturday and US authorities warned it could generate a tsunami.The epicenter of the tremor, which hit at 3:34 am local time (0634 GMT), was 100 kilometers (60 miles) north northwest of the Chilean town of Chillan, the US Geological Survey said.It was 105 kilometers (65 miles) west southwest of Chile's city of Talca and 115 kilometers (70 miles) north northeast of Concepcion, it said.

      A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific on Monday, triggering panic but causing no major tsunami, disaster officials said.The US Geological Survey said the quake struck about 103 kilometres from the earthquake-prone island town of Gizo at about 9:36 am (2236 GMT Sunday) and was measured at a depth of about 30 kilometres (19 miles).It was the largest of a swarm of tremors centred on the area, ignited by a 6.5 magnitude quake at 8:48 am and followed several hours later by quakes of magnitude 5.3 and 5.2.
