Dow Jones breaks through 10,000

 

The Dow Jones index tops the 10,000 mark for the first time in a year, boosted by better-than-expected results from JPMorgan.

In US dollar terms, the index had an exceptional performance this year. As of November 30th, the index is up nearly 136%. In terms of the Brazilian Real it is up about 77%. Last year this index lost 56%.

  • AP - Upbeat forecasts from JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Intel Corp. propelled the stock market higher for a fifth day. The Standard & Poor's 500 index topped the 1,200 mark Wednesday for the first time in a year and a half. The Dow Jones industrial average moved above 11,100. Corporate earnings numbers and government reports on retail sales and regional economic conditions all indicated that the recovery is taking hold.

  • Surprisingly strong earnings reports from Intel Corp. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are sending stocks sharply higher. In early trading Wednesday, the Dow Jones industrials were about 40 points away from the 10,000 mark, a level not seen in a year.

  • American jazz pianist Hank Jones died on Sunday in a New York hospital following a short illness, his agent Jean-Pierre Leduc who lives in Montreal told AFP. Jones was 91.Jones, who was born into a musical family, was the older brother of Elvin Jones, the legendary drummer for John Coltrane, and of trumpeter Thad Jones -- both deceased.Jones had remained very active in his last years, despite his age, touring Europe in 2009, with shows in Vienna, Paris, Geneva, the Czech Republic and Istanbul.
