    Stephen Harper
    Prime Minister of Canada
As I write this article, Stephen Harper is concluding an interview on the CBC National News with host Peter Mansbridge. Mansbridge and Harper are both in London for the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebration. After a cursory chit chat about the Jubilee celebration, Mr. Mansbridge brings up the subject of the present euro crisis, and seeks the Canadian Prime Minister's take on the matter. Harper's brow seems to furrow as he begins to speak.Harper, who is the only G7 leader who is a trained economist, is frank and discusses his very deep concerns about a possible meltdown in Europe, and its consequences for his own country and the rest of the world's economies. He is uncommonly frank for suchComplete Story »

    • Mulcair moves on from Layton’s wedge politics on Afghanistan to reach deal with Harper over Mali mission

OTTAWA — The Conservative government has cobbled together a nascent political consensus with the Opposition NDP that should permit an extended deployment of Canada’s heavy-lift military cargo plane, which is ferrying war equipment into Mali. New Democrat Leader Tom Mulcair agreed Sunday to allow the air force’s C-17 cargo plane to continue assisting French and African forces as they battle al-Qaeda-linked militants, said NDP foreign affairs critic Paul Dewar.

    • ‘Fanatically’ knowledgeable Stephen Harper really did write his book on hockey … and ‘it’s surprisingly good’

In 2010, during the Vancouver Olympics, Stephen Harper gave a revealing interview to Sports Illustrated about his upcoming hockey book, a subject he’s been coy about with Canadian reporters. The prime minister said his research into the early days of hockey — from the 1870s until the First World War — shows how important the sport was in our idea of what it meant to be Canadian.

    • Trudeau’s response to Boston Marathon Bombing was unacceptable, made ‘excuses’ for terrorists, Harper says

Prime Minister Stephen Harper took a swipe at Justin Trudeau on Wednesday after the new Liberal leader talked about the need “to look at the root causes” that led to this week’s terrorist attack in Boston. In an interview with the CBC’s Peter Mansbridge that aired Tuesday night, Trudeau was asked how he would have responded to the attacks that killed three people and left about 170 injured.

    • MP hopes to score with third shot at creating a National Hockey Day in Canada

OTTAWA — It’s been tried twice before but maybe this time Canada will finally get its National Hockey Day. An NDP private member’s bill tabled Tuesday seeks to make the third Friday in February a non-statutory day of celebration for, in the words of the late Stompin’ Tom Connors, “the best game you can name.” It’s not clear if the bill will get all-party support to pass, but the first incarnation was introduced by a Liberal and it’s no secret that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is a huge hockey fan and connoisseur of the game.

    • Harper defends surprise EI house calls amid ‘abuse’ claims

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says federal workers who interview employment insurance recipients in their homes are just doing their job as opposition critics labelled the new procedure “abusive.” Hundreds of millions of dollars are lost through false or inappropriate claims, the prime minister said, and Human Resources Development Canada must ensure that money for EI is there for people who qualify.

    • #dayinthelife: Stephen Harper tweets his day

Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of the Prime Minister of Canada looks like? According to Stephen Harper – or at least his handlers – it starts with breakfast with his cat, Stanley. To mark the first day back in the House of Commons, Harper’s official twitter account tweeted what a typical day looks like for him using the hash tag #dayinthelife. “House of Commons resumes sitting tomorrow. Follow my tweets to see what a normal day for me looks like … ” Harper’s official Twitter account tweeted Sunday evening.

    • Trudeaus don’t need any tips from the Harpers on raising family in public eye: Laureen Harper

OTTAWA — Laureen Harper has no tips for the Trudeaus about raising a young family in the public eye. In fact, Harper says, she could probably take lessons from newly elected Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie. “I wouldn’t give her any advice, they are more public,” Laureen Harper said in a recent interview at 24 Sussex Drive. “She would walk down the street and people know her. I walk down the street and nobody would know me.”

    • Trudeau would be prime minister if election was held today, poll finds

OTTAWA — Canadian voters would flock back to the federal Liberals if an election occurred now with Justin Trudeau as party leader — making them contenders to defeat the Conservatives and form government, a new poll has found. As well, Trudeau is the top choice among voters to be prime minister, surpassing the Conservatives’ Stephen Harper and Tom Mulcair of the NDP. The findings are contained in an exclusive survey conducted for Postmedia News and Global Television by Ipsos Reid.

    • Stephen Harper seeks consensus within Parliament on increased role in Mali

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he is searching for a “consensus” within Canada and Parliament on how to contribute to stopping the spread of terrorism in Mali, but he will not allow a direct Canadian military mission into the African country. Harper made the comments Wednesday, just one day before the government’s one-week, “time-limited” military involvement in the matter is set to expire. Canada has provided a single military transport plane — a C-17 — to ferry French troops into Mali, where Islamist militants are threatening the stability of the country.

    • Where’s Mulcair? NDP Leader apparently ‘engaged,’ if not visible, on aboriginal protests

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair has kept a low profile throughout the aboriginal protests sweeping the country. But his office maintains he’s fully engaged in the file — it’s just that he’s more interested in trying to produce results than photo ops. The NDP leader had planned to host a private meeting Thursday evening at the official Opposition leader’s residence with 20 chiefs, including Assembly of First Nations national chief Shawn Atleo.
