    VIX - Market Sentiment
Tuesday the U.S. markets woke up to digest a few different data points. First and foremost the news of Moody's cutting the debt ratings of Italy, Spain and Portugal. Germany then gave us some very positive news with the economic sentiment numbers coming in at 5.4 blowing away forecasts. Then U.S. retail sales disappointed with a reading of 0.4 when analysts were expecting a reading of 0.8. All this mixed news actually had S&P futures down 9 handles off the top. The spot CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) opened slightly higher but futures were actually up a little more the day before settlement. Volatility ETF's (VXX), 2x ETF (TVIX), were up in the pre-market but overall on a percentage basis were acting as one would expect on a day before VIX settlement. VIX futures are pricing in as below Yesterday February VIX futures 19.58 March VIX futuresComplete Story »

    • VIX - Options Volatility Sonar: Tuesday Recap

By Erick McKitterick: VIX - Market Sentiment: Tuesday saw heavy buying pressure in the futures which were up more than 14 handles today. As the S&P ETF (SPY) opened above 129.00 for the first time since late October the flow was very bullish. The interesting point more than anything was the price action in the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX).

    • VIX - Options Volatility Sonar: Wednesday Recap

By Erick McKitterick: VIX - Market Sentiment: Wednesday the stock futures range was fairly tight until around 5 a.m. when the German DAX topped out. The futures only initially moved 8 handles which lines up directly with how the spot CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) performed Tuesday. This yesterday really concerned me as I really feel the spot VIX should have dropped below the 20 level.
