    Vietnam opens new international airport

    Vietnam has opened a new international airport in the the southern Mekong Delta, state media said on Sunday.The 150-million dollar Can Tho International Airport, built on 20,750 square metres (240,000 square feet) of land, will process up to five million passengers a year, Vietnam News Agency reported."The airport provides a big opportunity for Can Tho city in particular and the southwestern area in general to make fast and sustainable development and helps facilitate air travel in the region," Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said at the inauguration on Saturday.

      Japan on Saturday pledged $7.4 billion in aid over three years to help five Mekong states, in an attempt at fostering development in a resource-rich region also being courted by China."The stability and prosperity of East Asia will not be possible without the stability and prosperity of the Mekong region," Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told a press conference following a summit in Tokyo."The Japanese government will recognise the Mekong region as a significant destination of assistance and continue its cooperation strongly."

    • Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group Launches Oil Platform

      Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group, better known as PetroVietnam, have launched the nation’s first indigenously built 300 foot-high drilling rig and Moc Tinh oil platform. Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang and Vietnamese ministers and agency heads, along representatives from the Russian Embassy and the Russian Consulate General in Vietnam attended the launching ceremony at Vietnam’s Vung Tau petroleum port. The ceremony was held on the 50th anniversary of PetroVietnam, VietnamPlus news agency reported.

      Authorities plan to move nearly a quarter of a million people this year from disaster-prone areas in northern China into newly-built homes, state media reported Saturday.About 240,000 will be moved in the first stage of a ten-year project to shift 2.4 million people away from less-developed mountainous areas in Shaanxi province, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
