    Ukraine Prosecutors Probe Tymoshenko Over Killing

    Prosecutors said they are investigating whether jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was involved in the contract killing of a lawmaker in the 1990s, the latest in a slew of allegations against the Ukrainian president's chief political opponent.

      Ukrainian prosecutors said Thursday they had opened a new criminal probe against former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko on suspicion of abusing power while in office.She is accused of exceeding her authority in a purchase of 1,000 new Opel Combo vans for the health service that lost the state some $8.3 million dollars, the prosecutors said in a statement.Officials said they had no immediate plans of placing the former Orange Revolution leader under arrest."To date, there is no reason to arrest her," said prosecutor Olexander Kalifistky.

      Prosecutors filed a fresh charge against Ukraine's former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the embattled politician said."They have lodged an additional charge, of embezzling 960,000 hryvnias (92,000 euros, 120,000 dollars)," Tymoshenko told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency. She already faces a charge of abuse of power.The sum in question had been paid by the government to the state bank into the Ukraine Treasury's account, she said.On the first charge alone, she faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
