OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the acquittal of a Saskatchewan woman who gave birth in a Walmart bathroom stall and left the newborn in a toilet. In a 5-2 split decision, the court ruled in favour of April Halkett, who was found not guilty in June 2009 of abandoning the baby boy two years earlier in the store in Prince Albert, Sask.

There seems little question that Craig Jaret Hutchinson acted in a “dastardly” way when, eager to keep his girlfriend from leaving him, he secretly poked holes in their condoms and got the woman pregnant. But a string of judges has considered a trickier question: was his prophylactic sabotage criminal? Nova Scotia’s highest court decided Thursday that it was, upholding Hutchinson’s sexual assault conviction and 18-month prison sentence in a case that raises intriguing questions about consent during carnal acts.

LONDON — A woman desperate for another child forced her 14-year-old daughter to get pregnant using syringes of donor sperm, a British judge said. In a ruling reported for the first time Monday, High Court judge Peter Jackson said the mother had behaved in “a wicked and selfish way” that almost defied belief. The judge said the woman, an American divorcee living in Britain with three adopted children, hatched the plan after she was prevented from adopting a fourth.
