Tourist boat capsizes off Mexico coast

Search conditions were favorable Tuesday as U.S. and Mexican authorities scoured the sea for several people missing after a tourist boat capsized Sunday off the east coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Canadian Olympic gold medallist Adam Kreek had to swim underwater to safety when his boat capsized Saturday in the Atlantic Ocean. Kreek, fellow Canadian Markus Pukonen and Americans Patrick Fleming and Jordan Hanssen are back on dry land in Puerto Rico after their boat capsized near the end of an attempt to make a record-setting row across the Atlantic.

HALIFAX — The RCMP say the hull of an overturned fishing boat off southwest Nova Scotia has been spotted. The Mounties in Woods Harbour say aircraft observed the hull of the Miss Ally around 10 a.m. today. They say at the time of the sighting, a fishing boat was about an hour away from the site and the Canadian Coast Guard was about 1 1/2 hours away. The RCMP say crews will assess the situation and determine what happens next.

Scores were missing on Wednesday after a small boat carrying more than 200 African migrants fleeing Libya capsized in rough seas, with Italian coast guards managing to pluck 48 survivors from the water.Coast guard spokesman Vittorio Alessandro told AFP from the southern Italian island of Lampedusa that a helicopter crew aiding the high-seas rescue operation had spotted some 20 bodies near the boat."We are still hoping. Our boats and helicopters have thrown all sorts of lifejackets and lifeboats to allow people to hold on," Alessandro told AFP.

WOODS HARBOUR, N.S. — The father of one of five young Nova Scotia fishermen lost at sea says word that divers found no sign of their bodies beneath a capsized vessel is hard to accept, yet it gives him a sense of closure. “There’s no need for any more search,” said George Hopkins, whose 27-year-old son Joel Hopkins was among the missing. Nearby, a dozen cars were parked and a steady stream of family friends came and went, offering condolences as they entered his brightly lit house.

HALIFAX — A search was underway Monday for five halibut fishermen whose vessel capsized off the southwest coast of Nova Scotia in 10-metre seas lashed by hurricane-force winds. The 13-metre boat, based in Woods Harbour, N.S., had a crew of five on board when it sent out a distress signal Sunday at 11 p.m., said navy spokesman Lt. Peter Ryan. “The weather out there was very poor, low visibility and high winds and very challenging seas,” he said in an interview from the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax.
