Taiwan plans to loan for the first time a treasured painting to China in yet another sign of warming ties between the two former bitter rivals, officials said Thursday.Previously, Chinese requests to borrow nationally important cultural relics have been rejected as Taiwan feared the works might be confiscated. But the National Taiwan Museum said it plans to loan a 17-century portrait and other art treasures to the Hubei Provincial Museum in central China and another museum in Fujian province for exhibitions next year.

Max Stern was given a choice. Do nothing, some Nazi thugs informed him, and risk never seeing his mother Selma again or else begin selling off the Stern family’s priceless art collection for whatever price a renowned Jewish art dealer — in Hitler’s Germany of 1938 — could get and then use the proceeds to pay for his mother’s exit visa so she could join him in exile in London, England.

    • What is the deadweight loss from museum art collections?

Steven Kopit, a loyal MR commentator, asks: Tyler - Let’s have more on the economics of museums. That’s actually an interesting topic. Only a very small portion of the collections of the Louvre other major museums is on display at any given time. I think it would make a great deal of sense to provide additional venues for shows–including in China. In the end, holdings of art (like income, per SS) only matter is someone actually consumes them, ie, gets to see them.

    • China’s Art Market Stumbles

In June, a Chinese entrepreneur bid $46 million at a Beijing auction for a landscape of red mountains, a painting inspired by a Chairman Mao poem.   The work by artist Li Keran was among the year’s top international sales, beating out masterpieces by Monet and Warhol.   It was the kind of heady Chinese auction price the art world has grown accustomed to, especially after China was listed on one major ranking as the world’s largest art market last year. But 2012 brought few other big sales as the months wore on, and worry set in.
