    There was a surprise fall in UK manufacturing output in April, official data from the Office for National Statistics show.

      British manufacturing output fell unexpectedly in April from the level in March when it had soared, official data showed on Friday.Output in April dropped 0.4 percent from March but it grew by 3.4 percent on a 12-month basis, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in a statement.Output in March had jumped 2.2 percent from the February level in the biggest rise for eight years.

      NEW YORK — U.S. manufacturing growth picked up in March as new orders increased and hiring quickened, closing out the best quarter for the sector in two years, a survey showed on Monday. Financial data firm Markit said its U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index rose to 54.6 last month from 54.3 in February. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. Output increased, though the rate of growth slipped to 56.6 from 57.3 in February.

      Official data due Tuesday is set to show that the British economy witnessed a sharp slowdown in the second quarter due to weak real income, high prices and austerity measures, analysts said.The Office for National Statistics will publish its first estimate for gross domestic product (GDP) for the April-June period at 0830 GMT.Many analysts expect weak growth of around 0.1-0.2 percent in the second quarter compared with the previous three months, while some predict that GDP may even hit reverse gear.
