    SunPower Increases Quarterly Revenue, First Solar Sees Big Losses

    By Robert Dydo:SunPower's (SPWR) first-quarter revenue of $494 million was a 9% increase over the same period last year, but it was a drop of 12% sequentially in comparison to Q4. While the gross margin saw a drop of 53% compared to the same period last year, the result was in line with Q4, achieving a positive 9%. The net income was a negative $74 million, or a loss of $0.67 per share. Cash and cash equivalents went down 54% to $302 million quarter to quarter, while the company managed to reduce its debt by 34% from $978 million to $639 million. In absolute dollars, this represents a transfer of items on the balance sheet worth of $335 million, including the redemption of $199 million of convertible debt.The company's 21% efficiency modules are the highest rated commercially, including modules from other manufacturers.     • TransAlta posts loss on pension funding

      CALGARY — TransAlta Corp. missed analyst estimates in the first quarter, but the company’s president said Tuesday that he was pleased with the company’s ability to counter lower revenue with higher electricity output and reduced costs. The power generation company had a net loss of $11-million, or four cents per share, while adjusted profit fell to $32-million or 12 cents per share and revenue fell to $540-million.

    • Hudson’s Bay Company announces dividend, but loss widens in inaugural report

      TORONTO — Hudson’s Bay Co. plans to initiate a quarterly dividend of just over nine cents per share despite a wider a loss from continuing operations. The dividend will be paid Dec. 27 to shareholders of record on Dec. 19. HBC said its loss from continuing operations was $8.5 million or eight cents per share in the third quarter. That compared with a loss from continuing operations of $7.5 million or seven cents per share in the same year-earlier period.

      Zacks.com submits: Kimco Realty Corp (KIM), a leading real estate investment trust ((REIT)), reported a 17.3% increase in first quarter 2010 rental revenues compared to the year-earlier quarter. Revenues for the reported quarter increased to $227.0 million from $193.6 million in the year-ago quarter.
