    Strong quake jolts Peru

    A strong earthquake jolted several regions of Peru Sunday including the capital, Lima, with no damage immediately reported, the National Geophysics Institute reported.The quake, which hit at 2246 GMT, had its epicenter 28 km (18 miles) southwest of the Ayacucho region, at about 115 km (71 miles) depth, said the institute, adding it measured a 6.0 on the Richter scale.Residents in crowded Lima poured into streets alarmed by the earthquake.The US Geological Survey said it was a 5.9-magnitude quake.

      A powerful earthquake rocked southern Iran on Monday, Iranian and US seismologists said, but there was no immediate word on any casualties or damage.The Tehran University Geophysics Department measured the quake at 6.1 on the Richter scale, state television reported. The US Geological Survey put it at 5.7.The quake hit the town of Konar Takhteh in Fars province at 2:52 pm (1122 GMT) and was felt 175 kilometres (110 miles) away in the provincial capital Shiraz, state television and Iranian news agencies said.

      A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake in northwestern Mexico near the Mexico-US border rocked buildings as far away as Los Angeles, and was felt in a wide area in the two countries, officials said.Mexican officials reported some minor injuries and damage to buildings in Mexicali, a border city near the epicenter.The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake, which struck at 3:40 pm (2240 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) was located 26 kilometers (16 miles) south-southwest of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico.
