    • Mitt Romney's Playing with Chinese Matches

On Sunday, I explained the economic, strategic and political problems with Mitt Romney's plan to impose countervailing duties on Chinese imports in order to pressure China into changing its currency policies.  Today, two news articles show that, only a week after its release, Romney's politically-motivated plan may already be backfiring.  The WSJ explains:

    • Tagg Romney Says His Father Didn't Want To Be President

No one wanted to be president less than Mitt Romney, his son said in an interview out Sunday that raises new questions about the candidacy of the losing Republican nominee. In an interview with the Boston Globe examining what went wrong with the Romney campaign, his eldest son Tagg explains that his father had been a reluctant candidate from the start.

    • Governor Chris Christie Praises Obama Response to Sandy, Doesn't Give a Damn About Election Day; Will Christie's Comments Tip the Election?

Here's a headline story including an interview on Fox news that caught me by surprise: New Jersey Chris Christie Praises Obama, Doesn't 'Give a Damn' about Election Day The presidential candidates have canceled all campaign events on Tuesday, but Republican New Jersey Chris Christie seemed to be stumping for President Barack Obama by appearing on several networks to praise the federal response to Hurricane Sandy.

    • Will Obama Make Wall Street Pay for its Support of Romney?

In 2008, Wall Streeters invested millions in Barack Obama’s campaign. Many of these big donors were thus a little miffed when Obama, as President, derided Wall Streeters as “fat cats” and, to add injury to insult, threw his support behind the Dodd-Frank bill, much hated in the financial sector it was designed to reform. This time around, Wall Streeters turned against Obama, sending an even bigger torrent of cash Mitt Romney‘s way. That didn’t quite work out as planned.

    • Mitt Romney Makes The Case For Boosting Aggregate Demand In His Announcement Vide0

As a former Mitt Romney 2002 voter and someone who continues to be a fan of his eloquent defense of abortion rights, I’m heartened that in his announcement video former governor Romney continues to show some flashes of the intelligent moderate he once was:

    • Dean Baker: 'We’ve lost about $6 trillion in housing wealth, and I expect we will lose more.'

When I looked over the invitees to the Treasury Department's forum on housing policy today, I noticed one of the names that wasn't there: The Center for Economic and Policy Research's director, Dean Baker.

    • How many jobs did the governor create?

LAST night, contenders for the Republican nomination for the American presidency gathered to debate. Among the topics covered, the economy received particular attention, and the leading contenders went out of their way to tout their job-creation records. This made for a few moments of cognitive dissonance, as candidates who would normally be first to cast doubt on the ability of government to do anything useful proudly boasted of the means through which they, as state governors, grew the economy.
