MARKET DIRECTION Stock averages end narrowly mixed, pausing from the strong start to the week. Still, averages finished off earlier lows, helped by tech and energy stock gains. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 12,000 on Tuesday for the first time in 2 1/2 years and its narrowly firmer finish today is its third straight day for an advance.
