Statoil expects to produce 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day (boepd) in North America by 2020, up from the 149,000 boepd produced in the first quarter of this year, as it moves away from barely profitable natural gas fields to concentrate on more lucrative liquids-based acreage. ...

    • No gas, please: Australia shale hunters focus on oil

Shale prospectors in Australia’s vast Outback are homing in on oil as the lucrative prize that is easier and cheaper to exploit than gas. Initial hopes had been to replicate a U.S. shale gas boom, but the economics of targeting oil rather than gas derived from shale formations, once considered a mere by-product, look increasingly compelling in Australia.

    • Low gas prices may yet boost petrochemicals

The Canadian petrochemicals industry is well placed to benefit from low natural gas prices, if only it had access to new markets, exports to the United States were not falling and one of its most crucial feedstocks was not in short supply. Sound familiar? In many ways, the Canadian petrochemical industry is tracking the fortunes of the country’s natural gas industry: an expected bonanza of riches in long-term gain, but pain in the short term.
