    Smithsonian Goes Mass Market

I have a forthcoming piece on QVC, which means I've been spending a lot of time keeping current on home shopping news.  I have become a huge fan of the Home Shopping Queen, who displays an astonishing breadth of knowledge of all things home shopping, and does a yeoman's job keeping abreast of the news. That's where I caught this little tidbit:  the Smithsonian is licensing its jewelry collection to QVC.  Now you, too, can own your own copy of the Hope diamond, done in authentic Diamonique simulated diamond, and available on five easy payments of $15.47.Actually, I think it's nice--and yes, I also approve of those machines that let you have a canvas replica of a Monet for $150.  Why shouldn't people have beautiful replicas in their homes?  Allowing the American public to enjoy a little piece of their national museum seems like a nice alternative to just raising their taxes.

    • Innovation and Invention: USPTO and Smithsonian Museum Partner in Exhibiting 'The Great American Hall of Wonders'

The exhibition, The Great American Hall of Wonders, examining the 19th-century American belief that the people of the United States shared a special genius for innovation, is now open at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It is a collaborative effort between the museum and Commerce's U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and explores six subjects – three natural resources, three man-made inventions – that helped shape America during this period: the buffalo, Giant Sequoia, Niagara Falls, the gun, the railroad and the clock. The exhibition will focus on the ways these six subjects brought together artistic, scientific and technological ways of seeing the world. In addition to providing creative and technical assistance for development of the exhibition, the USPTO has played a part in the public program development by working with the museum to provide:  speakers for university level courses as well as inventors from the National Inventors’ Hall of Fame for a lecture series.   There will also be a day and a half long inventors symposium held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the USPTO will take the lead in providing experts to address the many challenges facing independent inventors and entrepreneurs.

With 30 million visitors in 2009, the Smithsonian Institution -- which oversees 18 of the most prestigious museums and cultural centers in the United States -- has rebounded to pre-2001 attendance levels, it said Wednesday. The increase can be explained in part by the reopening of one of the Smithsonian's jewels, the National Museum of American History, which holds one of the first versions of the Stars and Stripes flag, among other invaluable objects. After a two-year renovation, the museum saw 4.4 million visitors during 2009, the Institution said.
