Retirees send kids to school in Uganda

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) — Police SWAT teams and hostage negotiators were locked in a standoff Wednesday with a gunman authorities say intercepted a school bus, killed the driver, snatched a kindergartener and retreated into a bunker at his home.

Responding to reports that the National Rifle Association is robocalling residents of Newtown, Conn., the state's two U.S. Senators lashed out at the organization's CEO in a scathing letter jointly released Monday.

Several members of the Guelph Conservative riding association have left the group because they are unhappy with the way the central party reacted when local election worker Michael Sona was charged in connection with a fraudulent robocall that sent hundreds of Guelph, Ont., residents to the wrong poll on election day.

BYRON, Maine — Residents of a small town in the far northeastern state of Maine rejected a proposal that would have required a gun in every home. While only about 50 registered voters in the tiny town of Byron voted Monday against the ordinance, it was a defeat for a fringe movement among American towns to mandate gun ownership. Some of the Maine town’s roughly 140 residents said the proposal made the town a laughingstock. Others resented the proposal, calling it government overreach.

WICHITA, Kansas (Reuters) - Sometime on Sunday morning, a Pennsylvania high school student will be presented with the keys to a black Honda Civic just for going to a party after the school's annual prom dance. In Roanoke, Virginia, one student will drive away next month with a new car and two others will get iPads.
