    • Rick Saccone, the Republican candidate for Pennsylvania's open House seat, conceded to Democratic candidate Conor Lamb.
    • Trump won the district by almost 20 points during the 2016 presidential election.
    • Lamb led Saccone by a fraction of a percentage point in the race.

The Republican candidate in a close U.S. House of Representatives special election on March 13 in Pennsylvania conceded to his Democratic opponent on Wednesday, cementing a Democratic upset in a long-time Republican area that President Donald Trump handily won in 2016.
In an ominous sign for Trump's Republicans eight months before national midterm elections, moderate Democrat Conor Lamb led conservative Rick Saccone by a fraction of a percentage point in the race for the southwestern Pennsylvania seat.See the rest of the story at Business InsiderNOW WATCH: In 50 years we'll have 'robot angels' and will be able to merge our brains with AI, according to technology expertsSee Also:

The polls have officially closed in Tuesday's special election in Pennsylvania's 18th district - a patch of coal and steel country in southwestern Pennsylvania that includes swaths of suburban Pittsburgh surrounded by many far more rural areas. Once a reliably Democratic district, President Trump carried the 18th by 20 percentage points - blowing out Hillary Clinton and even far surpassing the 12-point lead captured by Mitt Romney back in 2012.

For an election in a district that won't exist in a few months, pundits are claiming that the outcome of Tuesday's special election in Pennsylvania's seventeenth district could be a harbinger of the November midterms.

    • What Pennsylvania’s extremely tight special election tells us about Democrats’ chances to take back the House

Here’s why everyone in Washington is talking about a special congressional election in Pennsylvania: It’s a very real possibility that a Democrat could win in a district that President Donald Trump won by 20 points in 2016. As of Wednesday morning, Democrat Conor Lamb and Republican Rick Saccone are virtually tied, waiting on absentee ballots to decide the winner.
