    Mon, 01/07/2013 - 07:44 EDT - Seeking Alpha
    • James Picerno

By James Picerno: The US economy is expected to grow 1.6% in 2012's fourth quarter, according to The Capital Spectator's average econometric nowcast. That's up slightly from the previous 1.5% nowcast, published on December 17. The current outlook for 1.6% growth looks sluggish when compared with the 3.1% rise for Q3, as reported by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The official Q4 data is scheduled for release on January 30, when the BEA will publish its initial GDP estimate for the last three months of 2012. (GDP percentage changes are quoted as real seasonally adjusted annual rates.)Our current Q4 nowcast is based on the latest economic indicators available through January 4, which reflects an incomplete profile in terms of the December numbers. As the remaining updates for last month roll in, there's a chance that the Q4 nowcast will rise. Several key reports for December are due nextComplete Story »

By James Picerno: Second-quarter US GDP is expected to increase 2.9% (real seasonally adjusted annual rate), according to the The Capital Spectator’s average econometric nowcast. • Q4:2012 U.S. GDP Nowcast Update

By James Picerno: Will the rebuilding in the Northeast in the wake of Hurricane Sandy's destruction juice the economy's modest growth trend? It's too early to know, but the possibility can't be dismissed. For now, it's time to establish a baseline of nowcasts for Q4:2012 GDP. The official estimate is scheduled for release via the Bureau of Economic Analysis in late-February, and so there's a long road ahead in terms of economic updates.

The BEA released today its estimate of 2013 first-quarter real GDP, which grew at a 2.5% annual rate from the previous quarter. That's below the average 3.1% growth rate since World War II, but better than the 2.1% average since the recovery began in 2009:Q3.

    • Q1 GDP Rebounds, But Falls Short Of Forecasts

By James Picerno: U.S. economic growth rebounded in the first quarter after stalling in last year’s final three months, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports in today's initial GDP estimate. But while Q1’s 2.5% advance (real seasonally adjusted annual rate) is a substantial improvement over last year’s slim 0.4% rise in Q4, today’s number is still well below expectations.

    • ISM Manufacturing Index: December 2012 Preview

By James Picerno: The first look at how manufacturing activity fared in 2012's final month is the ISM report later this week. The stakes are higher than usual, as the nation braces for blowback from the still-unresolved fiscal cliff mess. Much like the political dialog in Washington these days, the December update on the ISM Manufacturing Index (scheduled for release on Wednesday, January 2) is expected to dance on the edge of a knife and remain precariously poised on or near the neutral 50 mark.
