VTI, which tracks a broad measure of U.S. stocks, is up around 15%; its U.S. bond counterpart, BND, is higher by roughly 5% (returns as of Dec. 2, 2011). • Portfolio Rebalancing: Threshold Limits And Correlation Of Assets Are Determining Factors

By Lowell Herr: Rebalancing a portfolio is only useful if there is a strategic asset allocation (SAA) plan and the portfolio holds more than one investment. For example, rebalancing is moot if a portfolio is limited to one investment such as VTSMX or VTI.

    • Striking Portfolio Balance with Gold Stocks

Gold stocks have historically ranked among some of the most volatile asset classes. Over any given one-year period, it is a non-event for gold stocks to move plus or minus 38 percent. This DNA of volatility is about three times that of gold bullion, which carries an annual volatility around 13 percent. Despite this volatility, our research shows that investors can use gold stocks to enhance returns without adding risk to the portfolio.

    • Money Managers Are Curiously Confident Over Recent Market Fluctuation

MyPlanIQ submits:Recently there have been no lack of bad economic news. In the last six weeks, investors went into a full blown risk off mode, driving most stock indices lower. It would be a good time to check how asset allocation fund managers positioned their allocations amid the market tumult. It turns out that, surprisingly, smart money managers have kept their allocation in risk asset very steady. The following is MyPlanIQ's SmartMoney Manager indicator, as of last Friday (6/17/2011):

    • Trading ETFs for Free - For Now, Vanguard Appears to Be Best Value

    • The Q Ratio Indicates a Significantly Overvalued Market

Doug Short submits: Developed by Nobel Laureate James Tobin. It's a fairly simple concept, but laborious to calculate. The Q Ratio is the total price of the market divided by the replacement cost of all its companies. The data for making the calculation comes from the Federal Reserve Z.1 Flow of Funds Accounts of the United States, which is released quarterly for data that is already over two months old.
