Pharmacyclics' Sale Of Blood Cancer Drug To J&J Is A Big Deal

    • EP Vantage
    • JNJ
    • PCYC

By EP Vantage:Pharmacyclics (PCYC) is ending the year with a bang. In the biggest phase II deal of 2011, the California company signed rights to its blood-cancer drug PCI-32765 to Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) for a huge $150m upfront, a deal that executives say will secure sufficient funding to take the Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (Btk) inhibitor to market without tapping investors. The global pact could represent a big win in the long term as well, as it entitles Pharmacyclics to half the profits generated by the partnership. Shares, however, were down 12% to $12.89 in early trading Friday. After more than doubling in price this year and with the anticipated licensing deal completed, major catalysts are now more than a year away, while any hope of a trade sale has been erased (Trial success opening doors for Pharmacyclics, June 15, 2011).Big deal Displaying a particularly well honed talent for hyperbole, evenComplete Story »

By Prohost Biotech:When on February 24, 2012, we wrote that the Pharmacyclics (PCYC) story is one of only a few in which the power of the firm’s product pipeline overshadows the stock market’s technical influence, we were not hallucinating, as some have claimed.

    • How Much Revenue Could Ibrutinib Generate For Pharmacyclics?

The company is currently conducting seven clinical trials on ibrutinib to expand the use of this drug candidate for CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), both for refractory patients and as frontline therapy.

    • Big deal

Pharmacyclics partnered its lead compound PCI-32765 with Janssen (JJ) last week for a cool $975m, including a $150m upfront. However, the market had already priced in a blockbuster deal and the shares fell 15% in response. The landmark deal provides for development costs and commercial profits/losses to be shared, but this means that Pharmacyclics will have to fund significant cash outflows during Phase III studies and the initial commercialisation phase.
