One fish, two fish: Troubles in the B.C. fishery

OTTAWA — While the outlook for the Canadian economy remains moderate with chance of improvement later this year, growth is expected to vary widely by region. But the gap between eastern and western Canada should begin to narrow, even as the fiscal climate in most provinces continues to deteriorate, according to BMO Capital Markets. “The resource sector continues to fuel solid growth in Western Canada, but Alberta’s economy is expected to downshift further this year,” said BMO senior economist Robert Kavcic.

The long-term global demand for fish seems to be a one-way trade which creates a long-term tailwind for the stocks.

The stock of fish is declining worldwide at a rapid and accelerating pace.  In Can Catch Shares Prevent Fisheries Collapse? the authors survey fish stocks and find that individual transferable quotas (ITQs) do appear to work in stabilizing and even increasing stocks:
