NYC bus drivers don't want buses used in protest (AP)

Drivers of New York's yellow school buses planned to go on strike Wednesday, leaving 152,000 children looking for a new way to get to class on time. The drivers' union announced the strike Monday after failing to come to an agreement with the city over job security. The strike will also include staff known as matrons who oversee the children as they get on and off buses.

Police fired tear gas and arrested more than 200 people and four people were injured as anti-Wall Street protesters tried but failed to take over downtown buildings, including City Hall, in Oakland, California.Protesters from Occupy Oakland -- the local offshoot of Occupy Wall Street -- first targeted the Henry Kaiser Convention Center on Saturday, before proceeding to a YMCA and then City Hall, police officials said."Three police officers and one protester have been injured and three private vehicles have been vandalized," the police department said in a statement.

It’s fun to talk about building new subways and light rail lines. But for cities that already have some substantial walkable neighborhoods and basic mass transit infrastructure, probably the most cost-effective thing they can do to improve urban mobility is to invest in improved bus service. One big win along these lines in recent Washington, DC history has been the rise of the S9 express bus. It runs basically along the north-south 16th street route that before its inception was already served by the S1/S2/S4 lines.

MONTREAL — Bombardier’s electric transit technology will be tested next winter on buses in Montreal, followed in early 2014 on an urban route used by passengers in the German city of Mannheim. The transportation giant’s Primove technology is designed to allow buses to be charged by underground induction stations when they stop to let passengers hop on and off.
