Mexico’s mogul with an eye for a bargain

May was one of the worst months for Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim. For the first time in four years, Slim was bumped from his perch as world’s richest person by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, a position Slim has held since 2010 when the value of his mobile phone carrier America Movil (NYSE:AMX) soared.  For the 2013 Forbes billionaires list in March, Slim clocked in at $73 billion, while Gates came in at second richest with an estimated net worth of $67 billion.

Mexican immigrant groups in the United States threatened Tuesday to boycott telephone companies owned by Mexican mogul Carlos Slim to protest what they say are abusive charges."Carlos Slim's monopolistic practices have imposed significant costs to the Mexican economy and burdened the people of Mexico and Latin America," said Juan Jose Gutierrez, of the nonprofit organization VAMOS Unidos USA.

Mexican mogul Carlos Slim, the world’s richest man, has added a new trophy, the magnificent Duke mansion across New York’s Fifth Avenue from the Met Museum of Art.
