    Major 6.1 earthquake hits eastern Tajikistan: USGS

    A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit a mountainous area of eastern Tajikistan early Monday, the US Geological Survey and Tajik authorities said, adding there were no initial reports of damage.The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 7:45 am local time (0245 GMT), was located 106 kilometers (66 miles) southwest of the city of Karakul, near the country's border with China, USGS said.There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage."For the moment we have no information about any victims," a spokesman for the Tajik emergency situations ministry said.

      A major 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit southwest Pakistan on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.The quake struck at around 1:20 am local time (2023 Tuesday GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles) with its epicentre around 50 kilometres west of the town of Dalbandin, close to the border with Afghanistan.The epicentre was around 300 kilometres (200 miles) east of the Iranian city of Zahedan, USGS said.Pakistani-administered Kashmir, in the country's northeast, was hit by a major earthquake in 2005.

      A 7.2 magnitude earthquake was detected Sunday in the Pacific near the central coast of Chile, US authorities said, noting the risk of local -- but not widespread -- tsunamis.The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at 2020 GMT, offshore the Bio-bio region in central Chile, a region struck by a massive 8.8 earthquake in February 2010.It occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers (20.5 miles)"No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.

    • Taiwan hit by 6.4-magnitude quake

      A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Taiwan on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.The quake struck 25 kilometres (15 miles) southeast of the eastern city of Hualien at 9:02 pm (1302 GMT), according to the USGS.
