    The first rule of kidnapping insurance is that you don't talk about kidnapping insurance.That's Seth Gitter summarizing some of the economics of kidnapping insurance over at the Blog of Diminishing Returns.  Seth also points us towards a story about Caracol Radio, a radio station in Columbia that broadcasts messages from families to hostages every Saturday night:The show is called Voces del
    Secuestro, or Voices of Kidnapping. (There are several other stations
    in Colombia that send messages out on other days of the week). The
    host, Herbin Hoyos, is a journalist who started this program in 1994,

      Gunmen attacked a camp for a construction company in rural northern Nigeria, killing a guard and kidnapping seven foreign workers from Britain, Greece, Italy, Lebanon and the Philippines, authorities said Sunday, in the biggest kidnapping yet in a region under attack by Islamic extremists. The attack Saturday night happened in Jama’are, a town in Bauchi state. There, the gunmen first attacked a local prison, burning two police trucks, Bauchi state police spokesman Hassan Muhammed told The Associated Press.

      YOLA, Nigeria — Two Canadians and two Americans who were kidnapped in Nigeria’s north-central Kaduna state on Tuesday have been freed and are in good condition, police said Saturday. Police and a special anti-kidnapping squad rescued the foreigners in the Kagarko local government area Friday night after a massive manhunt, state police commissioner Agyole Abeh said. “No ransom was paid. It was the efforts of the police through the directives of the Inspector General of Police that led to their release,” he said.

"Voice of the Caliphate" radio was destroyed by two U.S. airstrikes, according to a U.S. military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief media on the subject.

      The alleged mastermind of a kidnapping near Toronto three years ago that left one man dead has been arrested and charged with homicide in China. Peel region police Insp. George Koekkoek says 46-year-old Chinese national Guo Wei Wu is being held in China after authorities there recognized him in an Interpol notice. Police allege Wu was behind a plot to kidnap and hold for ransom Xiu Jun (Johnny) Fei and Jiangou (Tony) Han, two men reported missing in Mississauga, Ont., in January 2011.

    • Mali Islamists kidnap eight foreigners from BP natural gas field in Algeria

      ALGIERS, Algeria — Islamist militants from Mali attacked a natural gas field partly operated by BP in southern Algeria early Wednesday, killing a security guard, according to local media, and kidnapping at least eight foreigners, an Algerian official said. Seven others were wounded in the attack, including two foreigners, added the state news agency. Ireland has announced that one of the hostages is Irish.

      Marxist FARC rebels kidnapped the governor of Colombia's southern department of Caqueta, snatching him from his home, local media reported Monday.A unit of the leftist insurgency, Latin America's oldest and longest-fighting rebel force, abducted Luis Francisco Cuellar after attacking his home, the private radio Caracol said, citing local officials.The guerrillas lobbed a grenade at Cuellar's residence in Florence, the capital of Caqueta state, and exchanged gunfire with security guards before snatching the governor and fleeing.
