July Employment Report Shows Lackluster Growth

    Fri, 07/08/2011 - 11:32 EDT - Seeking Alpha
    • The Angry Bear

    The Angry Bear submits:
    By Spencer England
The latest employment report was bad news as payroll employment only rose by 18,000 compared with last month's disappointing rise of 25,000. Government employment fell 39,000 versus 48,000 in May. Private payrolls expanded only 57,000 and that was even weaker than the prior month's 73,000. Over the last two months payroll employment was essentially unchanged.(Click charts to expand)

Moreover, the household survey reported an employment drop of -445,000. This led to the unemployment rate rising to 9.2%
Historically the household survey tends to lead the payroll survey and the very poor performance of the household survey is extremely discouraging. In addition the average workweek was unchanged so aggregate hours worked only expanded 0.1% Over the last few months the index of hours worked has been: .........March......... April......... May........ June .........100.5......... 100.7........ 100.7 ..... 100.8

You would never know it from listening to the talking heads, but

    • Good news, but is it good enough?

AMERICAN employment put in a respectable performance in July. Non-farm payrolls rose 117,000, or 0.1%, and the unemployment rate edged lower to 9.1% from 9.2%, both better, but not dramatically so, than Wall Street had expected. Any other time this would have been cause for mild satisfaction. In these grim times, it constitutes a massive relief bordering on joy.

    • Headline Jobs +163,000, But Household Survey Shows -195,000 Jobs; Unemployment +.1 to 8.3%

ADP got the headline job number correct, I certainly didn't. However, one look beneath the surface shows this was actually an anemic jobs report. Unemployment was up, and the household survey shows a loss of 195,000 jobs. The household numbers are even worse because part-time employment went up. Jobs Report at a Glance Here is an overview of today's release.

    • 155,000 Jobs Added in December, Unemployment Rate 7.8%

A surprisingly uneventful report, as BLS reports that 155,000 Jobs were added in December, right on top of the 152,000 expected, and in line with the number needed to keep up with the growth in the population, or at least the Old Normal growth - in the New Normal only handouts matter. The unemployment rate was 7.8%, vs the 7.7% expected: who else is surprised that the rate is now rising with Obama reelected and when a lower unemployment rate means an earlier end to QE4EVA? The November unemployment rate was revised from 7.7% to 7.8%, just so headlines can proclaim the rate was unchanged.

    • USA Adds 163,000 Jobs in July, Unemployment Rate at 8.3%

After several poor months for job creation (adding well under 100,000 each month) we have some good news. Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 163,000 in July, with the unemployment rate at 8.3%. Since the beginning of this year, employment growth has averaged 151,000 per month, about the same as the average monthly gain of 153,000 in 2011.

    • Another Payroll Disaster: Jobs +69,000, Employment Rate +.1 to 8.2%, April Jobs Revised Lower to +77,000; Long-term Unemployment +310,000

Quick Notes About the Unemployment Rate

    • Employment Report: 224K Jobs Added but Bigger Gains Needed

The Angry Bear submits: By Spencer England The headline number of payroll jobs was strong and the markets are reacting strongly to the report that 224,000 jobs were created last month. Moreover, the job gains were widespread with temporary jobs and government the only sectors to show an employment drop. Private payroll employment rose 268,000, the largest increase this cycle.

    • Jobs News in the USA is not Good, Unemployment Remains at 9.1%

This was a bad month for jobs in the USA. Not only did the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report that the number of jobs remained at the same level as last month (125,000 additional jobs are needed for population growth, on average and we have huge losses from the credit crisis recession that have to be gained back) the last 2 months were revised down.
