    Injury forces Aussie swimmer Rice out of C.Games

    Australia's triple Olympic gold medallist Stephanie Rice will have shoulder surgery and miss the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October, the emotional swimmer said Thursday.Rice, in California to compete in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, said she could no longer swim through the pain caused by inflammation in her right shoulder and would have surgery, probably within a fortnight."Obviously it's a big disappointment to me," said Rice, whose week at the PanPacs is also done. "I have to think about the bigger picture, and that's definitely London 2012."

      Triple Olympic gold medallist Libby Trickett struggled in her comeback to competitive swimming at Australia's short course championships in Adelaide.Trickett, 26, in her first meet since her retirement in August 2009, on Saturday was 11th overall in the 50m freestyle heats in a time of 25.41sec and 13th in 1:00.86 in the heats of the 100m butterfly.This follows her sixth placings in Friday's 50m butterfly and the 100m freestyle finals.She clocked 26.72sec in the 50m butterfly final, more than one second outside the winning time of 15-year-old Yolane Kukla.

      Key defender Teneal Attard will miss the Commonwealth Games after suffering a serious knee injury in Australia's loss to the Netherlands at the women's World Cup, Hockey Australia said on Sunday.It is the third anterior cruciate ligament injury in Attard's career. She returned to the national squad 12 months ago after recovering from a similar injury, Hockey Australia said.Coach Frank Murray said Attard still had a chance of being part of the 2012 London Olympics squad and that captain Madonna Blyth may revert to defence to cover for her loss.

      Australia's triple Olympic gold medallist Stephanie Rice was stripped of her sponsorship deal with luxury carmaker Jaguar Tuesday after she posted a homophobic remark on Twitter.The swimmer landed herself in controversy after tweeting "Suck on that faggots!" in triumph at Australia's narrow win over South Africa in the Tri-Nations rugby on Saturday.Openly gay former rugby league international Ian Roberts led condemnation of the remark, which Rice has since removed and apologised for, calling her and anyone who supported her an "idiot".
