    By Rupert Nicholson:
    Company Overview
International Business Machines Corp (IBM) was one of the pioneers of the computing age. It is an informational technology company which provides many different services within the IT world. They were the first major corporation to profit off computers, and are still one of the major computer providers to businesses. Its closest competitors are Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Oracle (ORCL), Dell (DELL), and Microsoft (MSFT).
    Quantum Computing
Quantum computing was first theoretically touted by Richard Feynman, a nobel prize winning physicist, in 1982. Quantum computers use quantum mechanics to make use of data. A classical computer's information is made of bits. The bits can take a value of zero or one. In quantum computing, the normal laws of physics aren't applicable so qubits (quantum bits) can exist in many states at once.Consequently, if you have three normal bits on a conventional computer, you could have the values 000,001,010,100,011,101,110,111. Canadian researchers have succeeded in side-stepping an obstacle of Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, a strange law of the quantum world that says precise measurement is impossible, because the act of measuring changes what you are trying to measure. Their experiment in an Ottawa lab — in which they measured the polarization states of single light particles, called photons — is seen as a small step toward a quantum computer, a major goal of modern science.
