How Big Are Weekly Options? Check Out Groupon

By Bill Luby: One week ago, in Weekly Options Coming on Strong, I noted that weekly options now comprise approximately 15% of all options transactions. With all the trading volume I have accounted for this week, we may be up over 16% this week (only slightly kidding here.) It turns out that selling weekly calls in advance of today’s employment report was an excellent way to generate some income from long-term holdings and/or provide a targeted short-term hedge against the long portion of one’s portfolio. • Employment Situation Preview: Fewer Payroll Jobs Added, Grim Overall

Tomorrow the BLS will release the May Employment Situation Summary at 8:30 AM ET. As I noted in the weekly schedule, the consensus forecast for payroll jobs seems too high; Bloomberg is showing the consensus is for an increase of 190,000 payroll jobs in May, and for the unemployment rate to decline to 8.9%.

    • Blending Speculative and Traditional Income Stocks

George Fisher submits: Income investments are usually acquired for the long term. Over time, building a section of one’s portfolio with selections purchased for speculative income could be a strategy employed by investors to increase cash income. Searching out controversial, not well known, or turn-around stock opportunities that offer higher yields can be rewarding both for cash income and for capital gains potential. However, with the higher yields usually comes with a higher risk to capital.

    • Previewing Today's Payrolls Report

Below are the expectations of the biggest banks for today's Nonfarm Payroll number to be announced in just over two hours: Morgan Stanley +135K Barclays Capital +150K Goldman Sachs +150K Bank of America +160K JPMorgan +165K HSBC +179K Deutsche Bank +180K UBS +190K A quick and dirty summary from RanSquawk:

    • Jobs +236,000, Unemployment Rate 7.7%, Part-Time Employment +446,000

Initial Reaction The establishment survey reports of +236,000 job. For the first time in four months the establishment survey was accompanied by a healthy +170,000 surge in the household survey. Let's dig deeper. The economy added a whopping 446,000 part-time jobs. Thus, the economy shed 276,000 full-time jobs. Those part-time jobs were supposedly "on purpose". It's fair to point out the volatile nature of part-time statistics, but the 446,000 increase is unusually large.

    • Feb. Employment Numbers Good, but Not Good Enough to Boost Elevated Jobless Rate

James Picerno submits: Today’s employment report for February suggests that the stock market rally that began last September correctly anticipated rebound 2.0 in the post-recession period. Private sector employment rose by a net 222,000 last month, the most since last April and a sharp rise from January’s feeble 68,000 advance. Even better, job growth was widespread across the economy.

    • Chart of the Week: July Nonfarm Payrolls

Bill Luby submits: Any week the employment report is on the schedule, the big story is likely to be the nonfarm payrolls and last week was no exception. While the census employment cycle has lately skewed the headline number, the private payroll data, hours worked and average hourly earnings indicate that there are continued signs of improvement, small though they may be.

    • Chart of the Week: Updated Nonfarm Payrolls and Unemployment

Bill Luby submits: Any week that the employment report is released, that data is automatically in the running for the chart of the week. Given that the Bureau of Labor Statistics corrected some of the historical data series and stocks rallied sharply off of the not-as-bad-as-feared payroll losses, this seemed like a good time to update a chart that has always been a big hit and I that I have not published in seven months.
