Hackers claim stealing SonyPictures.com passwords

Hackers claimed to have staged another attack on Japanese electronics giant Sony, publishing online a file containing source code for the Sony Computer Entertainment Developer Network.The claim was made by a group of hackers known as Lulz Security, who said last week they had compromised more than one million passwords, email addresses and other information from SonyPictures.com."Presenting Sony Computer Entertainment Developer Network source code," Lulz Security said in a message on its Twitter feed @LulzSec which provided a link to a 54-megabyte file.

The California-based company, that allows people to store and organise personal data on an external server, is thought to have about 50 million users, reports The BBC. It said user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords were accessed. But it insisted there was “no evidence” that payment details or stored content was accessed, changed or lost.

Sony Computer Entertainment has been fined a record £250,000* by the data protection watchdog after the personal details of millions of gamers – including passwords and credit card numbers – were leaked online.

Sony Pictures Entertainment apologised Saturday over a personal data breach that hackers said involved more than one million passwords, email addresses and other information being stolen."We deeply regret and apologise for any inconvenience caused to consumers by this cybercrime," the company said in a statement after the latest online attack targeting the Japanese electronics giant."The cybercrime wave that has affected Sony companies and a number of government agencies, businesses and individuals in recent months has hit Sony Pictures as well," it added.

In the last hour, several Consumerist readers have forwarded us e-mails they have received from the video-streaming folks at VUDU. The message alerts customers to a recent theft at the company offices and the potential that customers’ private information could be compromised.
