GM's Vauxhall announces new Astra at UK plant

Vauxhall, the British division of US carmaker General Motors, said Thursday it would build the new Astra model at its northern England plant in a £125-million ($198 million, 156-million-euro) investment."Vauxhall today confirmed that production of its next-generation Astra compact car will be built at the company's manufacturing plant at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire," the group said in an official statement."Ellesmere Port will be the lead plant of only two in Europe building the new model." The car will also be built in Poland.

Vauxhall, the British arm of General Motors, on Thursday ruled out job cuts at its main car plant as it announced plans to increase the factory's production.Vauxhall said it was planning an additional shift at its Ellesmere Port site, northwest England. Union bosses however believe that the group's other British plant, in the town of Luton close to London, which makes vans, will soon officially hear that it is to lose about 300 jobs.

British autoworkers have overwhelmingly backed a job deal which clears the way for renewed investment at General Motors' Vauxhall plant in northern England.

General Motors announces that it has cancelled plans to sell Opel and Vauxhall to Canadian car parts firm Magna.

General Motors said Wednesday that it is withdrawing applications for some €1.8 billion ($2.2 billion) in European government aid to its Opel and Vauxhall units and will fund their restructuring itself.
