Facebook Privacy Policy Change Paves Way For Off-Facebook Advertising

ByTufenk:Facebook (FB) recently announced proposed changes to its privacy policy. These changes reveal for the first time its implicit intention to develop a new "intelligent" advertising engine which will ultimately deliver ads to other sites for advertisers.

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) has published a draft of his proposed "Apps Act," which if enacted will govern advertising, user privacy and data tracking on mobile phones. The area is currently mostly unregulated.

After Facebook acquired Instagram in September, one of its first major policy changes was to drop support for photo-sharing on Twitter — ostensibly a rival to Instagram for photo-sharing.

At a Social Media Week panel this week on digital privacy, it became clear how much data companies gather every time people sign in online. Even more concerning, no one seems to have a plan for how to protect that information.

Facebook outlined changes to its privacy policy on Thursday and asked for feedback from the social network's more than 300 million users.Vice president of communications and public policy Elliot Schrage, in a post on the Facebook blog, said members will have until November 5 to send in their comments about the proposed changes."This is the next step in our ongoing effort to run Facebook in an open and transparent way," he said. "After the comment period is over, we'll review your feedback and update you on our next steps."
