    Facebook makes outside applications ask for user data

    Facebook on Wednesday began making outside applications or websites detail what private information they want from people's online profiles.Websites or applications then must get permission from users for specific data, according to Bret Taylor of Facebook.The move came in the wake of Facebook revamping its privacy settings in order to appease critics who complained it was not properly safeguarding information.

      Facebook will agree to privacy audits for 20 years under a proposed settlement with US regulators over charges it engaged in deceptive behavior when changing privacy settings, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.The newspaper, quoting people familiar with the situation, said the proposed settlement is awaiting final approval from the commissioners of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC).The Journal said that in the future, Facebook would be required to obtain "express affirmative consent" from its users if it makes "material retroactive changes" to privacy settings.
