    Eurozone avoids recession, zero growth first quarter

    The eurozone logged zero growth in the first three months of the year, the EU said Tuesday, narrowly avoiding recession after a 0.3-percent contraction in the last quarter of 2011.The surprise figure given by data agency Eurostat beat analyst expectations, which had been for a 0.2-percent decline in economic output across the 17-nation currency area from January to March.

      The eurozone economy expanded 0.3 percent in the last quarter of 2010 to cap a year in which the single currency area returned to growth with a gain of 1.7 percent, European Union data showed Tuesday.After contracting a record 4.1 percent in 2009, the eurozone posted growth of 1.7 percent overall last year despite the debt crisis that rocked the euro, according to the Eurostat data agency.The fourth quarter figure was slightly less than the 0.4 percent growth predicted by analysts.
