By Bear Fight:As equity markets show modest signs of weakness as the DOW approaches 13,000, long-term investors should build a "watch list" of equities to buy in a pull back. Investors have been treated to a strong year-to-date rally of over 6% for the broader market. Investors who have flocked to large capitalization dividend paying U.S. equities over the last 18 months have underperformed the market in 2012. While dividend paying equities have underperformed the broader market early into 2012, I am sticking with large capitalization U.S. dividend equities and looking for a pullback to add positions. I believe these equities will perform better in an uncertain environment as there are many headwinds that remain. If risk assets falter, these companies will provide investors with attractive yields. Over the next 2 - 3 months I am looking for a modest pullback of 10% on the S&P500 to start to initiation position inComplete Story »

    • Getting Defensive With Utilities During The Pullback

By Bear Fight:Despite the year-to-date underperformance to the broader market, there are significant benefits to owning utilities in your portfolio. I think investors should stick with utilities due to their strong dividend yields and the potential for outperformance in a "risk-off" market. The markets experienced a strong rally in the first quarter of 2012, but since the beginning of April the broader market is starting to show real signs of weakness.

    • During Panic, Build Your Buy List

By Bear Fight:As the 10-year Treasury plumbs a new low yield as investors are panicking over the European debt crisis and a slowdown in the U.S., I think that long-term investors with a strong stomach should build their buy list. Many large capitalization equities yield significantly more than the 10-year Treasury and have embedded dividend growth from earnings per share growth. The panic driven 10-year Treasury will not provide investors with earnings growth.

    • Dow 17,000: How High Could Stocks Go?

The market rally of the past few months has propelled the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a new all-time high and has put the S&P 500 Index of within striking distance of its previous all-time high reached in October 2007.   In a note this week, Credit Suisse’s Private Bank Investment Committee said that ”plentiful liquidity, attractive valuations and low inflation” are helping fuel the current rally and “make equities among our best options in an asset allocation context.”

    • High-Yield Equities Paying More Than Treasuries

By Bear Fight:Over the last 12 years equity markets have made very little progress. While policy makers are concerned about stagnating employment growth and a "lost decade" from the U.S. economy, investors have already experienced their own lost decade in U.S. equities. While the 2000s ended with the bursting of the tech bubble and an overbought stock market, the last 10 years of no price appreciation have helped valuation. The Cult of Bonds

    • 5 Defensive Dividend Stocks For Your Portfolio

By Bear Fight:The economy and world markets will continue to be hamstrung by significant debt loads that took decades to build. The de-leveraging process that started in 2008 is proving to be long and painful. Central bankers all over the globe are doing their part to ease debt loads by keeping interest rates low. These low rates are hurting savers and retirees by forcing them into risk assets, including stocks and high yield bonds.

    • BofA: We Are Now Seeing The First Signs That This Huge Rally Could Reverse

The S&P 500 has been grinding steadily higher in 2013 as no real bearish catalyst has yet given investors reason enough to sell stocks. For weeks, while Wall Street strategists have mused that this may be the beginning of a "Great Rotation" out of bonds and into equities, they've also warned that a correction is near.

SL Advisors submits:This past week we added to three positions we already like. Boulder Total Return Fund (BTF) is one of the most heavily discounted closed end funds (currently 17.9%), and we’ve written about it before. It pays no distribution, and is therefore shunned by income-seeking closed end fund investors.
