    Double Hat-Tip to Tyler Cowen

    Sun, 07/25/2010 - 10:06 EDT - Coordination Problem

    |Peter Boettke|Over at Marginal Revolution, Tyler Cowen points to a new paper by Thomas Sargent on Free Banking, and to a recent discussion by Arnold Kling on recalculation.First, with regard to Sargent's paper, am I being 'elitist' when I conclude that Larry, George and Steve would have a more productive conversation by concentrating on dealing with Sargent rather than Rothbard?Second, am I being "silly" when I read Arnold and simply conclude that Kling is making Austrian arguments throughout and just not acknowledging them?

    • Kling on free parking

Arnold isn't convinced: If we abolished free parking, would parking spaces be scarcer? Keep in mind that if the price of parking went up, this would cause movement along the supply curve as well as along the demand curve. Maybe the total number of parking places would decline (it depends on elasticities), but the one result you can predict with certainty is that the number of unused parking places would go up. Is that necessarily welfare-improving?

    • Bank of Canada Governor Addresses Austrian Economics and NGDP Targeting

Steven Horwitz This talk by Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney from Thursday is of note mostly for the fact that he explicitly addresses both Austrian criticisms of central bank policy and the position taken by NGDP targeters like Scott Sumner.  The bit on the Austrians is below.  He does a decent job of explaining the argument, but a not so good job, I would argue, on what it implies.

    • Further Evidence Against the Recalculation View of the Great Recession

Was the Great Recession of 2007-2009 the result of a large reallocation of workers out of the housing sector after it busted or was it the consequence of a collapse in nominal spending that could have been prevented by policy?

    • Arnold Kling Calls Me an Ideologue and/or Ranter

From Arnold Kling's entry yesterday: Kwak goes on to endorse Chinn's ideological rant that the Bush tax cuts caused the financial crisis. Yes, I know that Chinn is speaking in the tone of economic analysis rather than a rant, but only a left-wing ideologue would take the thesis seriously.
