    Digging Into the Non-Manufacturing ISM Figures

    Hmm ...
    NMI at 54.6%: The report was issued today by Anthony Nieves, C.P.M., CFPM, chair of the Institute for Supply Management Non-Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. The NMI registered 54.6 percent in May, 1.8 percentage points higher than the 52.8 percent registered in April, and indicating continued growth at a faster rate in the non-manufacturing sector. Interesting, when you look at it. But services tend to lag manufacturing, and over the last 20 years or so the manufacturing number is the one to watch first -- then you watch services for confirmation. Thus far, no confirmation, and the interesting divergence is that new orders were up strongly, +4.1 along with exports, up 3.5. There were no input commodities reported as down in price either. Trend or fluke? Tough to tell; prices paid didn't come in much at all (69.6 vs. 70.1) so the question becomes whether we're a month orComplete Story »
