Climate change to worsen food security, UN talks told

WASHINGTON (AP) — Global warming is already changing America from sea to rising sea and is affecting how Americans live, a massive new federally commissioned report says.

The world must spend an extra US$700-billion a year to curb its addiction to fossil fuels blamed for worsening floods and heat waves and rising sea levels, a study issued by the World Economic Forum (WEF) showed on Monday. As government and business leaders prepare to meet at the forum in Davos, Switzerland this week, the world’s nations are divided over who should pay for lowering emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for a growing number of extreme weather events.

Europe is confident of US support at this month's Cancun climate talks despite President Barack Obama's poll reverse and believes other top global polluter, China, is acting on climate change, the EU's climate chief Connie Hedegaard told AFP.Talking up hopes of a positive outcome at the November 29-December 10 Cancun Conference in Mexico, Hedegaard warned that failure on the heels of the acrimonious Copenhagen talks could scuttle global efforts to combat climate change.

India hopes to be a "bridge player" and help break a deadlock between advanced and developing nations over how to fight climate change, the country's environment minister said Friday."India is positioning itself as a bridge player" between rich and poor nations, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, who is attending UN climate talks in Cancun, Mexico, told India's NDTV news network."We want to be a bridge between the developed and the developing world," he said ahead of his departure for Cancun.
