    Chelsea pay penalty against Spurs in Premier League

    Chelsea missed the chance to go top in the English Premier League after Didier Drogba saw a late penalty saved in a 1-1 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday.Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who'd let substitute Drogba's shot go through his hands for Chelsea's 70th minute equaliser, brought down Ramires in stoppage time.But the Brazilian then produced a fine save to deny Drogba, who took the spot-kick even though fellow substitute and regular penalty-taker Frank Lampard was on the field.

      Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted on Friday that Frank Lampard will miss his side's crucial London derby at Tottenham this weekend.Lampard has been sidelined for three months after hernia surgery and a groin injury, but it was suggested this week that he would feature at White Hart Lane on Sunday after returning to training.However, Ancelotti believes Lampard needs at least one practice match before he is ready for the demands of the Premier League, so he will once again be without the England midfielder for a match his team desperately need to win.

      Spurs missed the chance to gain ground on the Premier League's leading pack on Tuesday after a defensive blunder saw them drop points in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland.Harry Redknapp's side looked to have done enough to secure an important victory at White Hart Lane after Dutch international Rafael Van der Vaart fired Spurs into the lead on 65 minutes.But Spurs's lead was to last only two minutes when a piece of comedy defending gifted an equaliser to Sunderland.

      Chelsea were left four points clear at the top of the English Premier League table after a hard-fought 1-1 draw away to London rivals West Ham on Sunday.Former Hammers midfielder Frank Lampard kept his nerve to draw Chelsea level from the penalty spot in the 61st minute, three-times having to strike the spot-kick after referee Mike Dean twice ordered a re-take for encroachment.The penalty award was controversial in itself, with Hammers captain Matthew Upson adamant he had played the ball before bringing down Chelsea substitute Daniel Sturridge.

    • Tottenham top 'Big Four' in transfer market

      Tottenham Hotspur's latest financial results published Tuesday showed the club had spent nearly 150 million pounds (251 million dollars) on transfers in the last 16 months, surpassing the English Premier League's 'Big Four'.Spurs's spending topped that of English champions Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in the same period and was only bettered by cash-rich Premier League rivals Manchester City.
