Charges over £4m fake coins haul

TORONTO — A Toronto man accused of taking part in an al-Qaeda-linked plot to derail a VIA Rail passenger train is “in a state of shock and disbelief,” his lawyer said Tuesday following a brief court appearance. Raed Jaser, 35, was ordered not have any communication with his co-accused, Chiheb Esseghaier, before being remanded back into custody in a packed room at the downtown Toronto courthouse.

Following the discovery of counterfeit $100 polymer bills this month, the RCMP is starting to worry that Canadians have grown overconfident in the new bank notes. The Bank of Canada unveiled the new series of bank notes in 2011, touting the their world-class security and durability. In the past several weeks, police have seized counterfeit polymer bills in cities within the Lower Mainland area surrounding Vancouver.

US authorities have shut down dozens of websites offering counterfeit goods and pirated music, five months after a crackdown on sites offering movie downloads.A spokeswoman for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security, told The New York Times the court-ordered seizure of domain names was part of an "ongoing investigation."She declined to provide further details, but Torrent Freak, a website about the popular BitTorrent file-sharing protocol, published a list of more than 70 sites it said had been targeted.
