It's easy to second-guess NBC's decision to pursue Ryan Seacrest as a replacement for Matt Lauer in the event that Lauer quits the "Today" show next year. After all, Seacrest is more an entertainer than a newsman (although he was a fill-in host for Larry King and King's choice to succeed him), while "Today" mixes a lot of hard news in with its fluff.
But there's a surprisingly strong argument in Seacrest's favor: He's actually more popular than Lauer, especially in the demographics that matter most to NBC.
