Canada Post pushing the digital envelope

Investment U submits: By Tony D'Altorio As usual, Apple (AAPL) is busy pushing the envelope. This time, it wants to change how internet commerce is conducted, by way of its iPhone and iPad devices. The company is dictating tougher terms, such as a 30% cut of subscriber content fees sold through its devices.

Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada chief executive, called on his top executives Friday to launch aggressive cost cutting measures aimed at trimming $50-million worth of expenses from the company’s operations by the end of the second quarter as competition mounts on the country’s largest carrier. “I cannot stress strongly enough to you my resolve to have our airline report a profit for 2013,” Mr. Rovinescu said in an email to Air Canada senior managers obtained by the Financial Post.

Burgers, pizza, and a wide range of groceries are on the menu for consumers who are too busy, or just too lazy, to make a food run—or even bother picking up the phone. Now that a critical mass of consumers have grown comfortable ordering pizza online, the next step appears to be ordering food through the TV. Or more precisely, through a video game console. This week, Pizza Hut and Microsoft introduced a “first-of-its-kind ordering app” that allows users to place orders for delivery via an Xbox 360 system.

The AOL-owned Huffington Post news website said Tuesday it would expand its Canadian operations with regionally focused editions for Alberta and British Columbia.The move comes nearly a year after the launch of the Huffington Post Canada in May, 2011, and follows a February launch of the French-language site Le Huffington Post Quebec."The sites will feature HuffPost's signature mix of news, blogging, community and social engagement, to capture the unique cultures of both provinces," the group said in a statement.
