Cafe Hayek Blog Closes Comments Section

    Mon, 12/19/2011 - 10:15 EDT - Dr. Mark J. Perry
    • RDF10

In October 2007, Greg Mankiw closed the comments section on his blog with this message "Why Comments Are Gone."  Now Don Boudreaux and Ross Roberts have just announced that they are indefinitely closing the comments section of Cafe Hayek, with this message "Comments to be Closed."   In both cases, the economics bloggers expressed frustration with the lack of civility among some commenters, and the "e-food fights." I've also experienced those same frustrations, along with concerns about the additional time it takes to moderate some comments, check the spam filter on a daily basis to free some of the comments stuck there, etc.  But for now, the comments section on Carpe Diem will remain open!

    • Comments Update

I know there’s continued frustration with the technical problems in the comments section. It’s a frustration I share. The bad news is that in the short-term it’s likely to get worse rather than better—Ryan’s gone now so there’s nobody to help me with rescuing comments that are improperly trapped in the spam filter. The good news is that a solution is at hand, and the CAP/AF tech team will be upgrading the software backend we use and the problems will be resolved.

Mark Thoma makes me aware of shifts in TypePad, and sends me to Bob Lawless: Comments, Spam, Loyal Readers, and False Positives - Credit Slips: The many interesting comments left by our informed readership help make Credit Slips one of the best places on the Internet for informed discussion about debt and bankruptcy issues. The many spam comments make Credit Slips a less useful resource.

I’m in Munich, for the DLD conference, where Ben Horowitz took the opportunity to introduce the Rap Genius guys to the European digital-media crowd. But it’s actually Horowitz’s partner, Marc Andreessen, who has the best explanation of what the investment is all about:

    • Hail to the commenters

AUTHORS tend to like "best of" lists that rank publications in various categories. If your site makes the list, you feel grand. If it doesn't, well, they're clearly using some bizarre criteria no one cares about, and anyway someone else is always publishing some other set of rankings some of which include you which obviously means they're the correct ones.

    • The Spam Filter

The spam filter seems to be catching a few more legitimate comments than usual recently. I just rescued about nine comments (out of over one hundred messages flagged as spam) from the last several days. Some of those comments were from some of our most regular commenters. I know that if you put in a lot of links your comment is more likely to be flagged. Besides that I don’t really know what it is looking for.

    • Clarification on Comment Section

By Ryan McNeely In case you missed Matt’s post from earlier this morning, we’ve had issues with spambots and need to manually approve one comment from each commenter before everything gets back to normal (go ahead and comment in this post if you haven’t done so already).  A couple notes of clarification:
