    Beige Book Part II: Prices

    Thu, 03/10/2011 - 11:00 EDT - Seeking Alpha
    • Hale Stewart

Hale Stewart submits: The Beige Book covers a lot of territory. I've covered manufacturing pretty heavily, as well as PCEs, so let's turn to prices.
Manufacturing and retail contacts across Districts reported rising input costs. Manufacturers in many Districts conveyed that they were passing through higher input costs to customers or planned to do so in the near future. Homebuilders in the Cleveland and Atlanta Districts noted rising material costs, but acknowledged little ability to pass through the costs to buyers. Retailers in some Districts mentioned they had implemented price increases or were anticipating such action in the next few months. There is little evidence of wage pressures across Districts. Wages remained steady in the Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Kansas City, and Dallas Districts, while moderate wage pressures were reported in the Chicago, Minneapolis and San Francisco Districts. Philadelphia, Dallas, and San Francisco noted that most wage increases were for workers with specialized skills.Complete Story »

    • Comments On The Beige Book

    • Reading Between the Lines of the Beige Book

The stock market may be providing a bit of relief today but don't let that fool you. The Federal Reserve is here to make sure that any whiff of optimism in the air is swiftly extinguished. The central bank released its latest Beige Book, which includes information from the twelve regions as of February 23, and it ain't pretty. Beige is like ennui. Today's report is more like despair. It's the Beige Book in a new shade of gray.

    • August Beige Book Admits Economy Heading Down

Daryl Montgomery submits: The Fed just released its Beige Book summarizing U.S. economic conditions up to the end of August and the takeaway was "widespread signs of a deceleration compared with preceding periods". In general though the report was a mastery of double-speak and attempted obfuscation.

    • U.S. economy still growing modestly: Fed Beige Book

WASHINGTON – The U.S. economy trucked along at a “measured” pace in recent weeks and hiring remained modest, according to a Federal Reserve report that did little to calm concerns about slow growth and high unemployment. Details from the manufacturing sector were mixed, the Fed said in its Beige Book report on Wednesday. Contacts in five of the Fed’s 12 districts reported worries about the outlook for 2013, predicated in part on concerns about a looming “fiscal cliff” contraction in the U.S. government’s budget.
